January 16, 2010

I know this looks like I'm a medic in some Asian army, but actually I'm stuffed into the back of an SUV with the Flotation Walls.

I listen to a lot of music. I spend a lot of time sifting through the countless numbers of bands for those few unheralded acts making fantastic art, hoping with every listen to fall in love with some new sounds, and to get other people to fall in love with them, too. In 2009/2010 I was lucky enough that one of those sounds was crafted by one of my best friends.

In this picture the Flotation Walls were touring New York, and I was hitching a ride with them to their show at the Paper Box in Bushwick, after they'd spent the day practicing in my apartment. This was the last of two trips that I'd see this group, and while they always blew me away this show was absolutely the more impressive. I spend more time writing on it here but suffice it to say I really thought that these folks had something electric.

Like I said, I've seen a lot of bands. Tiny local acts playing their first show, regional touring openers, and nationally touring headliners. I like to think I can hear when a group has that magically elusive "it". And damn, did they have it.
