July 4, 2011
This was taken at Ada's Fourth of July party while scanning the darkening horizon for signs of fireworks, after gorging ourselves on grilled meats, and booze, and ice cream. Like most of her parties there was food, much drink, and much merry-making. As an adult I've never been one for fireworks since I was kind of spoiled as a kid living unfairly close to a pretty big fireworks display in Parma, Ohio. I still enjoyed the Fourth, though, and not just as a day off from work. It was one of those days you could get people together and hang out outside, and cook out. I try to complicate it a bit in this email conversation I had with Ada years later, but as she distilled it, it's a pretty simple holiday. Get together, put some food on some fire, and celebrate.
