I can't remember where I first heard of the Alabama Shakes. I think it was something on NPR Music in late 2011. I remember seeing a performance on YouTube and just being blown away. Then I was blown away when I bought the 7" and then again when I bought the album. They started picking up a lot of steam in early 2012 and when I saw they added a date at the Webster Hall Studio at the last minute I had to be there. I ended up covering the show for All Things Go - one of the few live shows I actually worked in my last few years in New York - and holy hell was it a memorable one. Brittany Howard is a force.
