Dekalb Market in Brooklyn used to be this empty, unused space that some folks saw and decided to turn into a summertime bazaar of sorts using reclaimed shipping containers and boutiquey Brooklyn shops and restaurants. It only lasted a couple of years until developers realized the property could be turned into condos or something, but for that short time it was a fun little place. Somehow someone got it into their head that the wooden foundations they'd put down would be perfect for roller skating and once they corralled a DJ and sponsorship, Down and Derby was born. This was in only time I skated there (and I think Nina's first time on skates)and while it took a bit to get used to it again it was incredibly fun gliding around that small oval. Even better was watching the folks that had actual moves because in addition to the folks that were clearly there from roller derby, there is apparently a very live roller disco scene in Brooklyn. Because of course there is.
