June 29, 2013

This isn't even close to the first race I ran in 2013, but the extra stuff about it made it one of the more memorable. The race itself was on the Coney Island boardwalk, which was tough not only because the boardwalk is kind of janky in places, but also because the design of the slats was dizzying if you paid too much attention to it. It was also an incredibly humid race, so my time (which I don't remember now) was worse than I was hoping for. On the plus side, though, the finish line was actually in MCU park, home of the Coney Island Cyclones minor league team. Since the race was named Take Your Base I was hoping that the finish would be at home plate, but sadly the bases weren't even out for the race - probably because a lot of people would have broken off to run the bases before/after finishing. It was still pretty cool to run the inside track of the park, though, and afterward I got free burgers, and two free beers. Not bad for 10:30am second breakfast. Though the part of the day that stood out the most was several minutes after I finished and changed shirts I heard some clapping begin down by the finish. I looked down to see a guy in a wheelchair pushing hard toward the line and soon enough I, and everyone else in the park, started cheering madly for him. It was a fantastic little moment.

After the race (and after much resting and rehydrating)Leah and Dave and I met up with one of Leah's friends and walked down the boardwalk to the little crappy bar that's an offshoot from the wait station of one of the Tatiana restaurants, which is another one of my favorite places in New York, to drink beer and watch the waves.
