May 21, 2014
I always dreaded the farewell gatherings at work. They were always a mix of sad and awkward, pleasantly punctuated by wine and cheese and brownies from Trader Joe's. I was fearing mine most of all, because I thought I was going to have to talk or something, but luckily for me Roger decided to do all the talking (perhaps unsurprisingly?) and all that was left to me was to eat and drink. The short remarks I'd been nervously going over and over in my head mostly made it in to the goodbye email I sent out a couple of days later.
Folks smiled and chuckled at my choice of food (ice cream cake) and raised their eyebrows in surprise at my choice of beverage (three liter box of red wine from Trader Joe's.) And when everyone cleared out and went home a few of us stayed behind, ordered some pizza, and watched Can't Hardly Wait on the screen in the video conference room, because that's the kind of place that office was - and will be for at least a little while longer. Far from the classiest way folks have been sent off by Bedford/St. Martin's (Macmillan Education) but really I wouldn't have had it any other way. Except maybe I would have added a bottle or two of whiskey.
